Why an 18 LED FireFly Dome Light?

Have you ever been flying down the road at night, trying to read a map? Well, stop it! and don't do it again!!!

Have you ever pulled over to the side of a road to read a map and have found that it is a tricky positioning move just to get the map close enough to the dome light to illuminate the route on the map, only to find that now you can't even see the map? If you are driving an original Volkswagen Bug, I'll bet your answer is, DUH, of course.

I am sure that you are familiar with the light from your incandescent dome light bulbs becoming dim to inoperable as your cars switches and connections corrode or your generators / alternators brushes wear and that beloved 12v turns and becomes 6 volts. You try to read a map and find that even with the map right next to the dome light, you still cannot read the it.

Have you ever accidentally left your dome light on overnight only to find that your battery is stone cold dead, with not even enough juice to push start your ride? Bummer, late to work again.

Being a bug maniac since the mid-50s, there has been one little problem that has just stuck in my craw and because it is so pervasive in the Volkswagen family, I just knew someone would come up with a solution. Within the pages of a popular VW magazine, it was advised that putting a 6 volt bulb in the dome light fixture would remedy the problem. After burning out a couple of bulbs and melting the dome light fixture to a very dark and aromatic brown, that solution proved to be too expensive and a possible fire hazard. A remedy didn't happen and the complaints continue to circulate to this day.

Because over so many years a satisfactory solution failed to materialize, I finally took the bull by the _ _ _ _s and developed a new accessory to elevate bug drivers happy factor and make their driving experience safer and all the more enjoyable.

Now here is your opportunity to improve on the precious metal that you love.
For a mere $19 with shipping, you will get one 18 LED FireFLy Dome Light.

18 LED FireFly Dome Light Element Installation:

Before installing your new 18 LED FireFly dome lighting unit in your stock dome light fixture, be sure to first check to make sure the stock configuration is operating properly. If not it is usually the door jamb switch that has developed some corrosion and can easily be repaired with some lubrication and exercise. If necessary, remove the dome light fuse from the fuse block before removing door jamb switch and hit the contacts with a little 220 sand paper. Replace switch and fuse and test for proper operation. Next, remove the dome light fuse and remove your stock dome light assembly and the incandescent bulb.
Place the new 18 LED FireFly lighting element centered on and the 18 LED FireFly facing towards the fixture lens. Make sure everything is fitting nicely and then measure, cut and strip the wires to no closer than 3/8 inch of taught fit. Solder the red wire to the single connector end of the incandescent bulb holder and the black wire to the double connector end of the incandescent bulb holder. Next, connect the 12 volt lead to the single connector end of the incandescent bulb holder and the two remaining leads to the switch end of the dome light assembly. Check for proper clearance between switch and bulb holder, then operation in all 3 On Off On switch positions. If all is well, using a little instant set adhesive (or a very small dab of silicon) attach the lighting element centered on assembly and let adhesive cure for a half to 2 hours or so depending on your adheasive. Again remove the fuse and install the completed assembly and place the switch in the Off position and replace the fuse.
Now that the installation is complete, check its' operation.

Happy Motoring

Note: the Yellowed dome light and door is from a stock dome light
